Toyota Differentials Regearing

Sacramento Regearing & Differential Services – What is regearing, and why does it matter?

Regearing is one of those upgrades that can completely change the way your off-road vehicle performs. Over the years, I’ve learned that as tire size goes up, so does the rotational mass, and that extra weight puts more strain on your drivetrain than most people realize.

When you swap to a lower differential gear ratio, you’re essentially giving your truck the mechanical advantage it needs to handle bigger tires, added armor, and all the extra weight that comes with a fully built rig. It’s not just about performance; it’s also a chance to refresh the wearable components inside your differentials.

The difference after regearing is immediately noticeable.

You’ll feel better torque and acceleration, have more control when crawling off-road, and even see improvements in fuel efficiency. Plus, you’ll be taking stress off your drivetrain, which means fewer repairs down the road.

If you’re in it for the long haul with your build, regearing isn’t just a “nice to have” it’s a necessary step to keep your rig performing at its best.

Signs You Need a Regear

You might be wondering if you even need to regear your truck.

The cost can feel steep at first, but many people end up paying far more in the long run in the form of damaged transmissions, blown differentials, or worn-out clutches.

Some early signs you may need a regear include your vehicle frequently downshifting just to accelerate up mild hills, struggling to merge onto the freeway, or feeling underpowered even when towing light loads. Poor MPG and unnecessary downshifting on the highway caused by nothing more than a slight crosswind are also common symptoms.

These issues are easy to overlook in day-to-day driving, but the difference becomes crystal clear when you compare your truck to a stock or properly regeared version. Once you experience the improvement, it’s hard to go back.

Why Stellar Built’s In-House Regear Service Stands Out

Stellar Built has been serving the Sacramento, CA area since 2022, but behind the name is a top-tier team with decades of combined experience.

The in-house specialist, who handles the technical side of regearing from shims and backlash to precision wear patterns, has been working exclusively on differentials for over 20 years.

Together, the Stellar Built team has regeared thousands of trucks in the Sacramento area and is one of the most trusted shops out here in Northern California. People from all over the Sacramento area come into Stellar Built for Re-Gear services, including residents from the Bay Area, Folsom, Rocklin, Roseville, Loomis, South Lake Tahoe, Redding, Yuba City, and beyond.

Stellar Built has such a strong reputation for quality that customers now ship their vehicles from other states and even other countries to have work done in-house. That trust comes from unmatched attention to detail, rigorous quality control, and a solid reputation in the off-road community.

Also, they typically have brands like Eaton lockers and Revolution Gear & Axle in stock, on the shelves, ready to install. This allows them to provide faster, more accurate service for not only Toyota off-road builds, but for every truck, SUV, and adventure rig in between.

Check out this post I wrote on the top reasons you should add an Eaton E-locker while you’re regearing your truck.

Benefits of Regearing for Off-Road, Overland & Daily Driving

Large Heavy Overland Tacoma Regearing Service

Whether your rig is a daily driver, a weekend warrior, or a fully built expedition vehicle, there’s a gear ratio that’s right for you. If you’re looking to improve torque while towing your weekend toys up to the mountains, regearing your tow rig’s differentials can make a huge difference. Or, if you want a slower crawl speed for tackling tough obstacles, a lower gear ratio can be installed in your rock crawler for more precise control.

I often see trucks that are built for daily use, maybe with a camper shell, side steps, and slightly larger 32-inch tires. Even in these cases, gearing down just one step to 4.88:1 in the differentials can help restore lost fuel economy, bring back torque, and overall improve the driving experience. It also raises your RPM slightly at highway cruising speeds, keeping your vehicle in the optimal power band.

At Stellar Built, they are focused on building things to last. Nothing hurts more than giving up on a good vehicle because of a major part failure. In today’s world, when transmissions or other expensive components fail, many people simply trade them in for something new. But by reducing strain on your drivetrain through proper gearing, you can help extend the lifespan of your transmission, clutch, and even your engine.

Of course, if you’re running an Atlas transfer case and 42-inch tires, that’s a whole different ballgame. But for most everyday drivers, from mild builds to adventure rigs, the right gear ratio can keep your vehicle performing at its best for years to come.

What Gear Ratios Are Available?

Revolution Gear and Axel Tacoma 5.29

In this example, we are using Revolution Gear and Axle gears as they are one of the high-quality, trusted sources that Stellar Built carries in-house. With Revolution Gear & Axle, we’re are able to get something simple, like just a Ring and Pinion, all the way up to complete kits with shims, grease, paint, and more.

The calculated gear ratio is dependent on a few things, but it is highly dependent on the size of the axle housing and tire size. For example, the largest ring gear one can fit inside of a 3rd gen Tacoma rear end is a 5.29 gear ratio. Also, when it comes to a 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon running a Dana 44 axle, the largest ratio possible is 5.13 gear ratio. Note to add, if your Jeep Wrangler is running the options Dana 35s or Dana 30s, there is are opens to go to a 5:38:1 ratio. This is possible because the overall internal differential is smaller, allowing more room for a larger ring gear. Needless to say, the options and configurations can be endless and very difficult to tackle.

Stellar Built is able to work closely with Revolution Gear and Axle to spec exactly what you need, as well as offer options Rem Surfacing Finishing if someone is looking to upgrade. Having a trusted team that is able to give examples of the most common setups and more is invaluable.

Whatever questions you might have around re-gearing in general, just give the guys at Stellar Built a call, and they will walk you through your options.

What to Expect: Stellar Built’s Regear Process

Stellar Built Differential Regear Services

Doing thorough research upfront is essential. Start by reviewing manufacturer resources such as Revolution Gear & Axle for specifications and recommendations. Supplement this with firsthand experiences from reputable off-road communities like Trail4R.com, TrailTacoma.com, and TrailTundra.com. This information can help determine the preferred brand, the correct gear ratio, and any additional modifications worth performing while the vehicle is in the shop.

Once a plan is in place, Stellar Built can order the required parts and schedule the installation. On the scheduled date, the vehicle is dropped off and the process begins. The front and rear differentials are removed with minimal disturbance to surrounding components.

The removed differentials are then transferred to a dedicated setup team for cleaning, gear installation, precise measurement, and quality checks. After passing inspection, they are reinstalled, torqued to factory specifications, and marked for verification. In most cases, a suspension alignment will also be required once installation is complete.

While the vehicle is in the shop, optional upgrades such as lockers, a differential breather relocation, or other enhancements can be installed. Following the manufacturer’s break-in procedure for new gears is critical, as neglecting this step can significantly reduce gear life and lead to costly future issues.

Customer Testimonials

Stellar Built Regearing Customer Testimony

I’ve taken my 3rd Gen Tacoma to Stellar Built for regearing, spindle gussets, cam tab gussets, and upper shock tower gussets. The process was impressive, especially seeing how quickly the team works and how efficiently they strip things down.

They’ve regeared 3rd Gen Tacomas countless times, so they know exactly which components to remove to access the differentials, nothing more, nothing less. Once the differentials are out, they reassemble only what’s necessary to keep the truck mobile around the shop.’

We used Revolution Gear and Axle 5.29 gears in my truck as well as added a front Eaton E locker. This turned my truck into an absolute trail weapon ready to take on anything we throw at it. I would time and time again recommend Revolution Gear and Axle for their legendary customer service, quality production, and absolute top-notch quality control.

In many cases, the team can pull the differentials in a single day. The remaining time is spent with the gear setup team and on the alignment rack. With this level of skill and efficiency, it’s no surprise that Stellar Built remains one of the most trusted shops in Northern California.
